Dental Implants Q & A
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a permanent prosthetic that replaces a missing tooth. Below the gumline, the metal implant functions like an artificial tooth root fused to the jaw bone to stay in place. Above the gum line, the implant crown resembles a natural tooth.
Dental implants take several months and multiple appointments.
Who Needs Dental Implants?
Dental implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth. You can also use a dental implant to solve other dental problems. For instance, a dental implant may be needed to attach a fixed dental bridge into place.
When you need to replace your teeth, there are three options available, including removable dental devices like dentures, fixed dental bridges, or permanent dental implants. Deciding on which replacement option is best for you depends on several factors, such as:
- Quality and quantity of your jawbone
- Location of your missing teeth
- Your overall health
Cost and your personal preference also play a role in determining the best solution for replacing missing teeth.
What Can I Expect During My Appointment?
During your first consultation, Dr. Shrestha will review dental images of your mouth and conduct an oral exam to determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
Your first procedure includes preparing the area for the implant. If you have a damaged tooth present, Dr. Shrestha extracts it. Bone grafts are often needed to build a solid foundation for the implant, and depending on the bone grafting you need, healing time can take two to six months or longer.
When the site is ready for your implants, Dr. Shrestha administers a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Using a special drill and tools, she installs the metal post into your bone. She also places a cover over the implant, and your gum is stitched up to heal for two to six months.
You will have regular appointments to check the health of the surgical site, and you may have a temporary denture to conceal your missing tooth during this time.
After your healing is complete, Dr. Shrestha tests your implant to ensure that it has successfully fused to the surrounding bone. She then takes an impression of the area and has a crown custom-made for your mouth. Implant crowns are either screwed onto the implant or cemented into place.
